Heritage Park

This week, I visited Heritage Park in Olathe. I will start by saying I enjoyed my visit. I've been to this park many times

before and always have a good time. I chose a nice day to visit weather wise. It wasn't too hot, which is good

considering that most of the walking trails are open to sunshine, with not much tree coverage. Other areas of the park

have plenty of shade though.

The park centers around a small lake which is currently closed to public use due to a recent improvement project.

There is however, a small, sandy entry to the water, where I saw some people peacefully fishing. There is also a small

dock coming off of a parking lot into the water. Here is a good place for fishing or even boating, which is permitted

in usual circumstances, with a license. Ahead of the docks are the restroom facilities and drinking fountains. I found

these to be well maintained and clean. Wrapping around the lake is a concrete-paved path down by the water, which

is a great place to get some steps in with a pretty view.

The Park includes multiple play sets, which were all busy when I passed them. There are also 10 shelters scattered

around the park. The shelters are open to general use but can be reserved through the Johnson County Park and

Recreation website. These are great spaces for hosting gatherings and support grilling.

It’s also important to note that Heritage Park is very dog friendly. The park has a 30-acre off-leash area, with a

fenced-in open area, a small pond and trail. The dog park is an open grassy field with some shade trees.

The park, generally, is accessible, with lots of flat paved trails even in the dog park.

Overall, I enjoyed my visit to Heritage Park and would go again. Using my rating system, viewable on the home

page, I would give this park a 7. It’s not all that big and doesn’t have any unique features, but is a well

maintained, and pleasant park.
